VIAJE A TEXAS EN 1828 – 1829. [TRIP TO TEXAS IN 1828 – 1829].
Jose Maria. Sanchez

Mexico: Editores de Papeles Historicos Mexicanos, 1939. xv, 79pp. Appendix. Introduction by Jorge Flores. Printed wrappers. Some soiling and age toning, overall, good+. This is the diary of one of the members of boundary commission appointed by the Mexican Government to gather data in Texas for a survey of the boundary with the United States. Sanchez, a lieutenant of artillery, was the draftsman for the expedition. His observations and descriptions of the country, the towns, the people and the indigenous tribes are detailed and give a good picture of Texas at that time. The appendix contains two letters. The first written in 1829 by Colonel Jose de las Piedras presents a brief but realistic picture of the impending danger to Mexican sovereignty in Texas. As commander of Nocogdoches, Piedras was an experience observer of the Anglo settler. The second, composed in 1844, by Captain Jose Maria Diaz Noriega is a tribute to the character of Mier y Teran. An important primary source for the history of 19th century Mexico and Texas
