Externally, it has been skillfully rebacked using the original spine. Internally, the expected scattered foxing. Overall, a very good copy.  Jenkins, BTB 77: The standard account of the financial history of the Texas Revolution and of the Republic of Texas, this book is much more interesting than the title suggests, mixing humor, anecdotes, and historical sidelights with statistics, finance, and fiscal theory.” Larned, The Literature of American History…. 2858: “Condemns Texas severely for its alleged failure to keep faith with its creditors. Valuable for its collection and arrangement of facts, not only to students of Texas finance, but to those of the science in general.” The author wrote several books on banking including A Short History of Money and Banking in the United States (1833), History of the American Banking System (1835), and Expediency of Dispensing with Bank Paper (1837). He also edited several journals including the Journal of Banking. In 1852, Gouge visited Austin to write this book.
