Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1952. Two volumes—1,731pp. Yellow and black cloth with gilt decorations. Endpaper maps with fictional genealogy chart. First edition with 1952 on copyright page and title page. A couple of corner bumps and some oxidation of the gilt, overall, very good. The unclipped dust jackets show sunning of the spine, edgewear and some chipping with an abrasion to the front panel of volume one, overall, good+. The book describes life in the fictional town of Sironia, widely thought to be the author’s hometown of Waco. It follows the success and failures of the citizens of Sironia through the early 20th century. It chronicles the life of Tam Lipscomb, the central character, as well as the Thaxtons, Storrows, and Hadyns. Likewise, the town’s black families are followed in their own triumphs and failures. They experience success in their families and also experience bitter racism due to interracial marriage. Winner of the Houghton Mifflin Literary award.
