REMINISCENCES OF THE TEXAS REPUBLIC; ANNUAL ADDRESS DELIVERED BEFORE THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF GALVESTON, DECEMBER 15, 1875…
Ashbel Smith
Galveston: Galveston Historical Society, 1876. xvi,82pp. Original printed wrappers. Reprint edition (ca. 1920) of the very rare 1876 original. Internally, an ink stamp and book plate of a previous owner, else very good. Externally, the expected age toning to the wrappers due to paper quality, semi-circular stain to the front wrapper with the toe of the spine chipped, considering the fragile nature of the binding, probably still a very good copy. Jenkins, BTB 186B: “Written by one of the wisest men of early Texas, this is the most astute first-hand account of the diplomatic activities leading to annexation. No one, with the exception of Sam Houston and Anson Jones, was more intimately involved in the process of acquiring international recognition of the Republic of Texas and bringing about annexation than Dr. Ashbel Smith.” Raines, Bibliography of Texas p. 190: “An able work by one of the really great men of the Republic.”
