HOW DID DAVY DIE?
Dan. Kilgore

College Station: Texas A&M Press, 1978. 48pp. Notes. Maroon cloth with title and author’s name in gilt on spine. First edition. INSCRIBED. Fine, bright copy. The unclipped, chip free dust jacket shows light age toning, else, very good. The author, who served as president of TSHA in 1977, gave his presidential address on Crockett’s death. Subsequently, he expanded his research into this monograph published by the A&M Press. After examining the accounts of seven of Santa Anna’s soldiers, Kilgore concluded that the De la Pena diary was correct. Crockett had survived the battle and was later executed on Santa Anna’s orders. This unleashed a fire storm that even included death threats. On the 30th anniversary of Kilgore’s book, Alamo scholar, Dr. James Crisp, wrote a fifty-page afterword to this edition. It is entitled How Did Davy Die? And Why Do We Care So Much? This is also a worthwhile edition to Alamo lore.
