HANGING SAM: A MILITARY BIOGRAPY OF GENERAL SAMUEL T. WILLIAMS – FROM PANCHO VILLA TO VIETNAM.
Col. Harold J. Meyer

Denton: University of North Texas Press, 1990. xvi,200pp. Index. Photographs. Bibliography. Pictorial paper wrappers. First edition. Slight bit of marginal wear, overall, near fine. Infantry Magazine: “…an accurate, detailed and highly interesting picture of…a top field soldier.” Hanging Sam chronicles the life of Lt. General Samuel T. “Hanging Sam” Williams who was relieved of his duties as Assistant Division Commander of the 90th Infantry Division following the Normandy invasion. He persevered to recover not only his lost star but two additional ones as well, an accomplishment unmated in modern army history. Following enlistment in the Texas Milita in 1916 to pursue Pancho Villa along the U.S.-Mexican border, Williams served in both wars, the Korean War, and Vietnam, where from 1955 to 1960 he was Chief of the U.S. Military Assistance and Advisory Group. Twice wounded in battle, Williams was decorated with every medal for valor the Army awards except the Medal of Honor.
