Adams, Six-Guns 1505: “Deals with gun battles and the bloody reign of the city marshals of El Paso.” This is the personal memoir of an Indiana native who moved to El Paso shortly before the Civil War, opposed succession, was arrested as a spy, eventually joined the Union Army, and became collector of U.S. Customs at El Paso. As a Republican party boss, he supported Reconstruction vigorously in El Paso and tangled with local troublemakers. The author details the daily events, political climate, and the frequent violence of the city. There is material on A. J. Fountain, a trip to Austin by stage, the Apache chief Victorio, the Cardis-Howard feud and the El Paso Salt War, Dallas Stoudemire, and more. A very scarce history of El Paso.
