FLAG SONG OF TEXAS

FLAG SONG OF TEXAS
[Texas – Sheet Music]
. Houston: The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, 1903. Approx. 14” x 11”. First edition. Some edgewear, overall very good. The colorful front cover is Texas flag attached to a saber with the song title at the top. The image of the saber and flag was drawn by Bernhardt Wall. There is an oval photograph of the Main Building on the University of Texas campus with the song dedicated to William L. Prather, President of U.T., by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Dr. Prather offered a $100 cash prize for the best original song on the subject of the Texas flag. The purpose was a song “suitable to be sung by pupils of the public schools and the students of the University of Texas…” The DRT was responsible for overseeing the contest and selection of the song. An interesting back story for a wonderfully visual piece.
