F. REAUGH TEXAS LONGHORN PAINTER.
Alice Bab & Modena Stroud Dailey. Stroud

Dallas: Royal Publishing Co., 1962. 143pp. Photographs including a number of reproductions of his art. Red cloth with silver lettering on cover and spine. First edition. Rubbing to the covers, most noticeably on the perimeter, overall, very good-. The tan pictorial dust jacket, with a photograph of Reaugh, lacks the spine and part of the front panel, except as noted, good. Born in Illinois in 1860, Reaugh moved, in a covered wagon with his family, to Texas when he was fifteen. His family grew cotton. But Frank was interested in art and nature spending time studying art at the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis and the Julian School in Paris. His favorite subject was the Texas longhorn which he had studied carefully while following herds along the Red, Wichita and Brazos Rivers. He is the only painter to specialize in the Texas “steer.” Some of his most famous works feature it in its natural habitat on the Texas plains. Reaugh, a popular art instructor, founded the Dallas School of Fine Arts and regularly led students on extended sketching trips across the Texas plains and beyond. The authors offer a personal perspective on Reaugh, utilizing his own words and recollections from people who knew him. These quotes provide insight into his philosophy and character. The text includes details about the influence of his parents (particularly his mother), his demeanor, the effect of his family's relocation to Dallas in 1890, and his ongoing association with the city, as well as his sketching trips with students. From an artistic viewpoint, the book reproduces the entirety of his rare work, "Twenty-four Hours with the Herd." While many collections feature his artwork, few focus on Frank Reaugh as an individual.
