LITTLE MANUEL THE CAPTIVE BOY.

LITTLE MANUEL THE CAPTIVE BOY.
Barbara. Hofland

[Miniature Book – Somesuch Press] Dallas: Somesuch Press, 1979. 57pp. Designed by Carl Hertzog. Bound in red Morocco with an image of an Indian brave stamped in gilt on the front cover, top edge tinted red. Facsimile reprint in miniature (approx. 3” x 2 ¼” ) of the 1831 original, #44 of a limited edition of 300 and SIGNED by Hertzog. Some oxidation of the gilt (most noticeably on the spine), else, fine copy. The Somesuch Press started in 1975 as a result of Billie Marcus, Stanley’s wife, wanting to give him a miniature edition of Minding the Store for his seventieth birthday. She rather quickly realized she was in over her head, enlisted Stanley’s help and thus, the Somesuch Press was born. This little volume is the result of a collaboration between Stanley and Hertzog who had worked together on a number of projects over the years. With Hertzog’s health failing, it was also the last time the two would work together. The book itself tells the story of nine-year-old Manuel who was captured by the Comanches. It recounts his experiences among them and his eventual escape. Unique in that, it was the only miniature ever produced by Carl Hertzog.
