Fine copy in an equally nice dust jacket. Barney Kemp Riggs, outlaw, lawman and gunfighter, was born in Arkansas in 1856. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Bell County where he spent his formative years. In 1887, Riggs, while a prisoner at the Arizona Territorial Penitentiary, risked his life to save Superintendent Thomas Gates. Riggs was pardoned by the governor and returned to the Pecos/Fort Stockton area. In 1893, the Jim Miller gang began terrorizing Pecos. In 1896, Miller sent his two best henchman, John Denson and William Earhart to kill Riggs. However, Riggs killed both men and destroyed the gang bringing a temporary calm to the area. Riggs, himself, was killed in 1902 at Fort Stockton by his stepson, Buck Chadbourne. The appendix contains legal testimony and accounts of gunfight with Denson and Earhart as well as information on the killing of Pat Garrett. Well researched, this is an interesting read.
